How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Try Mahjong Solitaire at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Look at what changes after your first action. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Read that aim before choosing your first action. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
